How does it work?

GPT - 3

GPT-3 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3) and GPT-4 are state-of-the-art language processing AI models developed by OpenAI. GPT-3 is the creator of ChatGPT and is one of the largest and most powerful language processing AI models to date, with 175 billion parameters. GPT - 3 was trained on approximately 3300 billion words, 570 GB of data sourced from books, wikipedia, research articles, webtexts, websites and other forms of content and writing on the net.
Nine months since the launch of our first commercial product, the OpenAI API, more than 300 applications are now using GPT-3, and tens of thousands of developers around the globe are building on our platform. We currently generate an average of 4.5 billion words per day, and continue to scale production traffic.

ChatGPT, every students new best friend - But BEWARE of its limitations.
Knowledge Gaps:
  • It has a limited knowledge of the world after 2021. It isn't aware of world leaders that came into power since 2021, and won't be able to answer questions about recent events.  This is because it is impossible to keep up with world events as they happen, along with then training the model on this information
Wrong Answers:
  • It can generate incorrect information, getting answers wrong or misunderstanding what you are trying to ask it. If you get really niche information, or add too many factors to a prompt, it can become overwhelmed or ignore parts of a prompt completely.
Bias & Stereotypes:
  • Because the system is trained largely using words from the internet, it can pick up on the internet’s biases, stereotypes and general opinions. That means you’ll occasionally find jokes or stereotypes about certain groups or political figures depending on what you ask it.
Toxicity
  • The models can also generate outputs that are untruthful, toxic, or reflect harmful sentiments. This is in part because GPT-3 is trained to predict the next word on a large dataset of Internet text, rather than to safely perform the language task that the user wants. In other words, these models aren’t aligned with their users.
Fake News:
  • The models use alot of information from internet forums and articles, giving it access to fake news and conspiracy theories. These can feed into the model’s knowledge, sprinkling in facts or opinions that aren’t exactly full of truth.

Law and Ethics

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AUSTRALIAN COPYRIGHT LAW AND CHATGPT

  • Australian copyright law does not explicitly mention AI or ChatGPT at the moment
  • Works are afforded copyright protection in Australia if the author is a human who has contributed "Independent intellectual effort"
  • If you solely rely on AI to create your images/text and cannot demonstrate that you contributed significant human effort, then the creative output may not be protected by copyright
  • If AI training utilised illegally copied materials and the output generated for you can be connected to these, there is a concern you could be issued with a takedown or infringement notice from the original copyright owner.
Advances in artificial intelligence raise new ethics concerns
In recent months, new artificial intelligence tools have garnered attention, and concern, over their ability to produce original work. The creations range from college-level essays to computer code and works of art. As Stephanie Sy reports, this technology could change how we live and work in profound ways.

How to use ChatGPT

The OpenAI API is powered by GPT-3 language models which can be coaxed to perform natural language tasks using carefully engineered text prompts.
